OBDII Codes List
OBD2 is a car diagnostics device that plus in to the majority of cars after 1995. You can pick one up from Ebay as little as £5 to get a quick diagnostic on your car. But I recommend getting ones at about £30, that you can plug in to your laptop, it’ll allow clearing codes better and DPF regeneration. You’ll commonly find the ELM327 version and there are about 11000 codes.
There are a standard for the codes so that they can be recognised universally. Here’s an example of a code you should see.
P0202
The Prefixes and Categories
P – Powertrain, (i.e. engine and gearbox)
C – Chassis
B – Body
U – User network
Fault Types
0– Generic fault
1 – Manufacturer fault
OBD2 Codes List
There is a generic list of codes but also manufacturers may have their own lists. Generally these are headed with:
0, 1, 2 – Relates to Air or Fuel
3 – Relates to the ignition system
4 – Relates to emissions
5 – Relates to an Idle Engine
6 – On board computer and ancillary outputs
7, 8, 9 – Relates to Transmission/Gearbox
A, B, C – Relates to hybrid propuls
